The UMMC Sambo Club (Verkhnyaya Pyshma) was given the right to host the European Sambo Championship 2020, which will be held from May 21 to May 25, 2020, in the Palace of Sports in Ekaterinburg. The corresponding agreement was concluded the day before between the club and the European Sambo Federation (ESF).
- There is a lot of work to be done. The ESF gave us credence, so we will make every effort to ensure that the championship is held at the highest organizational level, - said Valery Stennikov, Director General of UMMC Sambo Club, Honored Coach of Russia.
The European Championship will be the largest sambo tournament ever hosted by the Ural capital. . Earlier, in 2003 and 2017, Ekaterinburg hosted the National Sambo Championship, and in 2006 and 2014, the main national tournament was held in Ekaterinburg’s satellite city Verkhnyaya Pyshma. As it was previously reported, the decision to host the European Championship 2020 in Ekaterinburg was made in May this year at the ESF Congress in Spanish Gijon. In many respects, the choice was determined by the eminent positions that the UMMC Sambo Club holds in the Europe and the world. Over the past twenty years, UMMC athletes have won the title of world champions 15 times, and 11 times have become European champions. At the past championship in Spanish Gijon in May this year, Vladimir Gladkikh (up to 57 kg) won his second career title, and Eugene Eremin (up to 52 kg) won a silver medal.
