Representatives of the UMMC Sambo Club from Verkhnyaya Pyshma: six-time world champion and two-time European champion Alsim Chernoskulov (up to 100 kg), as well as two-time European champion Vladimir Gladkikh (up to 57 kg) will participate in the European Championship, which will be held on May 22-24 on home ground of Sport Palace in Ekaterinburg.
They won such a right at the Russian National Championship in Cheboksary as they become silver medalists in their weight categories. It is curious that for the third year in a row in the final of the Russian National Championship Vladimir Gladkikh competed against the same rival Sayan Hertek from Moscow and lost for the third time, having missed the retention by four points. On the other hand, these defeats allowed Vladimir to participate in the European Championships and twice win the main trophy there.
Our most experienced sambo wrestler, six-time world champion Alsim Chernoskulov, competed against an equal rival, in the final - multiple world and European champion Vyacheslav Mikhailin from Moscow. It is not surprising that the viscous and stubborn duel between the two excellent masters ended with the minimum advantage of the Muscovite - 1: 0, and that only due to the extra warning received by Chernoskulov.
“In such a situation, you have double feelings,” says Alexander Melnikov, head coach of the UMMC Sambo Club. - On one hand, it’s a shame for a missed victory in the finals, because Alsim was no worse than his opponent, and in a number of qualities he exceeded him, which this bout clearly demonstrated. On the other hand, Chernoskulov’s participation in the home European Championship will certainly become the highlight of the tournament, give him additional status and attract audience interest.
